Calendar Events for December of 2006Friday, December 1stLocation: All over Saugus Type: Other, Saugus Town Government Description: If today is your regular trash collection day, it's also leaf collection day for you. There will be no missed pickups conducted. The Town asks that you please do your part in proper preparation for disposal. We ask that you abide by the following rules: Leaves must be out for collection by 7:00 AM on your regular rubbish collection day. Leaf containers must be physically separated from trash and recycling. Paper leaf bags are preferred for leaf disposal. If barrels are used to contain the leaves, remove covers so the leaves are visible. No plastic bags or cardboard boxes will be accepted. No branches or brush will be collected. Please note that separate trucks collect the rubbish, recycling, and leaves; so the leaves may be collected at a different time of day. This new book, a sequel to A Gathering of Memories, Saugus 1900-2000, offers a continuing nostalgic account of a century in the life of Saugus. Location: First Baptist Church Melrose 561 Main Street, Melrose, MA 02176 Type: Holiday Price per Person: $15.00 Description: Come join us for a LIVE re-enactment of the birth of Jesus on our front lawn. There will be Angels, Shepherds, Wise Men, donkeys, sheep, goats and the Baby Jesus arriving on the front lawn of the church. Come listen, watch and sing as we tell the story of the birth of Jesus through narration, scripture and song. Following the Living Nativity, there is a fund-raising Christmas Buffet Dinner complete with Roast Beef, Baked Ham, Roast Turkey Breast, Italian Wedding Soup, Macaroni & Cheese, Pasta in red sauce, Salad & Dessert. Bill or Maureen at 781-231-3562 Sunday, December 10thLocation: Fisch & Game Club Melrose (technically in Saugus) Type: Contest Price per Person: $13.00 Description: The Melrose Running Club in conjunction with the Melrose Fish and Game Club will host the second annual Assault on Mount Hood 3.5 mile cross country running race on Sunday, December 10th at 11:00 AM. This challenging, but fun, cross country race starts and ends in front of the Melrose Fish and Game Club and meanders through the fairways of the Mount Hood Golf Course with views of the Boston skyline. The cost of registration is $13 prior to December 3rd and $15 thereafter. Proceeds from the race benefit Melrose Youth Recreation and Melrose Fish and Game Charities. Runners can register online http://www.melroserunningclub.com/assaultonmthood/2006/mthood.shtml or register on race day beginning at 9:30 AM at the Melrose Fish and Game Club on Stillton Road in Melrose. Based on the number of pre-registered runners today, the Melrose Running Club expects to have nearly double (approximately 200) the number or runners this year. The number of pre-registered runners today is 69, which exceeds the number of pre-registered runners on December 1st last year. In 2005, a total of 128 runners (most registered on race day) braved the 8 inches of snow on the ground to run the Assault on Mount Hood. The race is professionally timed by SARK and results will be posted on coolrunning.com immediately following the race. Age group awards will be given to the top male and female runners in each category. The race director, Brian Slater of the Melrose Running Club, said “This race would not be possible without the cooperation and support of the office of Melrose Mayor Robert Dolan, Golf Management LLC and the City of Melrose Parks Department.” Immediately following the race is a spaghetti luncheon and awards ceremony at the Melrose Fish and Game Club.
