The household hazardous waste collection event will be held Saturday, May 19, 2007 rain or shine. The collection allows residents to dispose of household hazardous materials in an environmentally responsible manner. Only Saugus residents who pre-register will be allowed to dispose of their waste at the collection event. Details will be provided at the time of pre-registration starting Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at the Inspectional Services Department of the Town Hall. Proof of residency is required and no commercial waste will be accepted. A pre-registered type of event reduces wait time and ensures that all registered participants are serviced. Residents may pre-register by calling Inspectional Services at the number above. The following is a summary of what items residents can dispose of at the event: oil-based paints, varnishes, stains, turpentine, paint thinners, solvents, adhesives, photography chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, cesspool cleaners, oven cleaners, drain cleaners, transmission fluids, degreasers, antifreeze, brake fluids, and car batteries. TVs and monitors will require a $10 sticker; propane tanks a $5 sticker; automobile tires are $2 a piece and truck tires $10 a piece. Stickers may be purchased at the Saugus Inspectional Services Department; all of the stickers must be purchased prior to the event. Do not bring explosives, ammunition, or latex paint (latex paint may be dried out and disposed of in the regular trash). Residents will be limited to two car loads which is 50 lbs. or 50 gallons of hazardous waste. It is a tremendous opportunity to help improve the lives of the 46 million men, women and children doctor-diagnosed with arthritis. Get your company involved or recruit friends and family members to form a team. Dogs are welcome too! Best of all, walk in honor of a loved one with arthritis and know you’re making a difference by raising funds to support Arthritis Foundation research, public health and public policy efforts to improve the lives of people with arthritis.
