The former Pastor, Rev. Walter Smith, will be speaking at Cliftondale Congregational Church, Sunday, October 2nd, at the 10:45 am worship service. Rev. Smith was the minister from 1980-1996. He moved to Lisbon, NY and now serves as Pastor of the First Congregational Church of Ogdensburg NY. He is a former "Saugus Man of the Year". Rev. Smith will be speaking on "The Sign of Jonah" (Matthew 12:39). All are welcome. The church is at 50 Essex Street in Saugus, 781-233-2663.

The Saugus Historical Society will present an exhibit entitled "From Cattle Drives to The Strip: The Story of the Newburyport Turnpike" at the Society's museum at 30 Main Street, Saugus. The exhibit will continue every Sunday afternoon from September 11 thru December 11 from 1 P.M. thru 4 P.M. with free admission. The exhibit will show by photographs and documents the history of the Turnpike in Saugus from its 1803 construction to the present, showing some of the early Saugus homes, the major 1930s divided highway and overpass construction, and the development thru the 1940s and later of the Strip. The exhibit will also look at the highway's future.

This is the business meeting of the Saugus Historical Society, but as always interested members of the general membership and general public are welcome.

Doreen Wallace of the Essex Street Antiques in Melrose will be our featured guest for this evening. You are encouraged to bring in an item for her to appraise, if you wish. This should be a very entertaining evening.

Donald W. Linebaugh Presents His Book "The Man Who Found Thoreau: Roland W. Robbins and the Rise of Historic Archaeology in America". After finding the ruins of Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond, controversial archeologist Roland W. Robbins excavated the Saugus Iron Works from 1948 to 1953. He then surveyed and excavated many industrial, commercial, and domestic sites in Massachusetts, New England, and other eastern states through the 1980s. Donald Linebaugh, Director of the University of Maryland's Historic Preservation Program and Associate Professor in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, will explore Robbins' place in the development of the field of archeology. Free presentation and book signing.

Come and join us for an entertaining evening of wine, hors d'oeuvres, desserts, and gourmet coffee to benefit the Library programs, services, and collections. Donors will receive a free commemorative wine glass with the images of the old and new Library buildings. The $25.00 donation is tax-deductable. Residents will be able to dispose of their household hazardous waste at an upcoming collection sponsored by the Board of Health. Only Saugus residents who pre-register will be allowed to dispose of their waste at the collection event. Details will be provided at the time of pre-registration starting Monday, October 3, 2005 at the Inspectional Service Department of the Town Hall. Proof of residency is reqired and no commercial waste will be accepted. A pre-registered type of event reduces wait time and ensures that all registered participants are serviced. Residents my pre-register by calling Inspectional Services at 781-231-4115. The following is a summary of what items residents can dispose of at the event: oil based paints, varnishes, stains, turpentine, paint thinners, solvents, adhesives, photography chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, cesspool cleaners, oven cleaners, drain cleaners, transmission fluids, degreasers, antifreeze, brake fluids, and car batteries. TVs and monitors will require a $15.00 sticker; propane tanks a $5.00 sticker; automobile tires are $2.00 a piece and truck tires $10.00 a piece. Stickers may be purchased at the Saugus Inspectional Services Department; all of the stickers must be purchased prior to the event. Do not bring explosives, ammunition, or latex paint (latex paint may be dried out and disposed of in the regular trash). Residents will be limited to two car loads which is 50 pounds or 50 gallons of hazardous waste.

Breakheart's annual fall celebration returns with free pumpkins for the kids, pumpkin decorating, sand art, face painting, candy in the hay pile, baloon sculptures, stuff the scarecrow and more. Plus a two hour country music concert with the John Penney Band. (1 -3 PM) And the best part? It's all free!!!!

Tonight's the deadline for the eighth annual Saugus.net Halloween Ghost Story Writing Contest.

Ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night return to Breakheart for a two evening visit. Proceeds benefit local high school drama clubs and charities. Not suitable for small children, but a Pumpkin Patch will be available to entertain the little ones.

Come join us for some great family fun. There will be games, dancing, face painting, pizza, soda, and goodies (don't forget to bring your trick-or-treat bag). Wear your costumes. Be as creative as possible (no scary or violent costumes please). Admission is free, however we do ask for a donation of 5 non-perishable food items to support the Pantry of Hope Food Pantry located at First Baptist Church Melrose and open to all who need to come.

Curbside leaf collection will take place on your regular trash collection day this week, so if today is your trash collection day, it's also your leaf collection day. There will be no "missed pickups" conducted. The Town asks that you please do your part in proper preparation for disposal. We ask that you abide by the following rules: leaves must be out for collection by 7:00 AM; leaf containers must be physically separated from trash and recycling; paper leaf bags are preferred, but if you must use barrels to contain the leaves, remove the covers so that the leaves are visible -- no plastic bags or cardboard boxes will be accepted, and no branches or brush will be collected. Please note that separate trucks collect the rubbish, recycling, and leaves.
