of Pittsfield, MA writes: I look at those old cards an am reminded of how Saugus, even when I was growing up, was a small, sleepy and self-contained community in which most residents worked within it's boarders to support the community long before the Rt1 expansion and GE-Lynn. Remember the steam engine trains that stopped at the Cliftondale Station with the commuters? I spent many hours with the old gate-crossing switchman on Essex Street by his little shack in total awe of the smoke and smell. |
