Dailies for October of 2001

October 31, 2001

A somewhat overcast sky hides the last Halloween full moon for the next nineteen years or so, but we've now started to post the winners in our fourth annual Halloween Ghost Story Contest. We'll be continuing to post them throughout the night, category by category. As in years past, while the Adult, Middle School, and Elementary categories were competitive (with nearly two hundred entries overall, fewer than half what we received last year but still a respectable number) the High School category only received one entry.

October 29, 2001

More answers to the "Questions to the Candidates" have arrived and have been posted; a couple from candidates for School Committee, and a few from candidates for Town Meeting. Also, the deadline for this year's annual Halloween Ghost Story Contest has already passed, so any more entries that get received will have to wait until next year's contest.

October 26, 2001

This is the final reminder -- tonight at midnight is the deadline for this year's Halloween Ghost Story Contest.

October 25, 2001

Remember, tomorrow night at midnight is the final deadline for this year's Halloween Ghost Story Contest. Also remember that if you're planning on leaving off a copy of your story in the Saugus Town Hall, it closes well before midnight, so last minute entries will have to come in either via e-mail or FAX.

The Saugus Sign By-Law Committee asked us to let everyone know that they have met for the first time and that committee members are looking for any questions residents or businesses might have concerning signs. Committee Members are as follows: Peter A. Rossetti, Jr. Chairperson; Dennis R. Robitaille, Clerk; Ellen Burns; Edward L. Carlson; Albert J. DiNardo; Thomas S. Gannon; and Donald Wong.

The first answers to the "Questions to the Candidates" have arrived and been posted. One is from a candidate for Selectman, and one is from a candidate for Town Meeting.

There is now only about one week until the deadline for this year's Halloween Ghost Story Contest on the 26th, and still not too many entries have come in yet (far fewer than last year at this time). When FAXing or e-mailing stories, please be sure to get a confirmation of receipt within a business day or two to ensure that the transfer completed properly.

We've posted our "Questions to the Candidates" based upon your feedback. If you're a candidate in the upcoming Saugus election, be sure to answer the questions so that we can post your answers online.

We noticed that all of the flags on display around town seem to be either the modern 50 star Stars & Stripes or the "Betsy Ross" version (13 stars in a circle). Please let us know if you see any of the more unusual American flags like:

  • the "Cowpens" (12 stars in a circle around a thirteenth)
  • the "Bennington" (13 stars in a sort of arch over a 76)
  • any of the valid forms of the Stars & Stripes with fewer than 50 stars (13, 15, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, and 49 are all legal -- 16 & 39 were produced in limited quantities but were never legitimate)
  • the "Gadsden" (rattlesnake)
We'll post pictures of any such flags with the others.
