DESCRIPTION:CLASSIC ROUTE 1!  Share your memories of Route 1 as we trave
 l back in time.  For many outside of Saugus\, the town is de
 fined as a 4 mile stretch of bright lights\, restaurants\, a
 nd shops.  The Newburyport Turnpike that was built in 1805 s
 uddenly blossomed in the mid-twentieth century as a destinat
 ion for many in eastern Massachusetts and beyond.  The inter
 esting signs and businesses of Saugus\, including Hilltop St
 eak House\, Prince Pizza\, Russo's Candies\, Red Coach Grill
 \, Kowloon\, Weylu's\, Augustine's\, Diamond Head\, Chicklan
 d\, Adventure Car Hop\, Flamingo Lounge\, Puritan Diner\, Th
 e Continental\, and so many more were known far and wide. So
 me are gone\, and some are very much still here.   Come see 
 a slide show of iconic places of the 50's\, 60's\, and 70's.
     This meeting will be held at the Legion Hall\, 44 Taylor
  St. in Saugus while the Saugus Historical Society's buildin
 g at 30 Main Street is under construction for the addition o
 f the SCTV studio.  Classic Route 1 is the first program for
  the 2020 Saugus Historical Society season and the meeting w
 ill begin at 7 PM on March 11.  It is free and open to the p
 ublic.  Light refreshments will be served.
