Dailies for July of 1998

July 31, 1998

We've added a page that should help with searching the Internet. It provides several methods for searching both the WWW and Usenet. Through this interface it should be possible to find references to almost anything.

Jim Harrington has announced that his popular Saugus Photos Online Page is now conducting a viewer survey. All are welcome to drop him a note and tell him what you think about his pictures, what sorts of pictures you'd like to see in the future, etc.

The Saugus Council on Aging requested that we post this announcement for them on the topic of Social Day Care:

The Cozy Corner of the Saugus Senior Center Social Day Care will be dedicated to serving older adults, preserving their dignity, and keeping their minds and bodies active within a stimulating, compassionate program of care. We will offer a supportive and safe environment where older adults have the opportunity to be involved, enhance their interests, be more independent, and develop friendships.

Our program will be open to anyone who is 60 years of age or older. Our program will be directed by a licensed masters-prepared social worker, who will be assisted by recreational counselors with years of experience in their chosen profession.

Our services will be of the highest quality. We will provide therapeutic activities (motivational, recreational, educational) throughout each day. Special therapy programs such as art, music, and plant therapy will also be available. Daily exercise and physical activities including stretching exercise, dance therapy, and low impact aerobics will be offered to those able to participate. Weekly events will also be held and will include festivities, parties, outings, field trips, and educational programs sponsored by area health and social agencies.

Our activities will be designed to maintain or improve the client's physical functioning, provide mental stimulation and challenge, improve social skills, and help improve the client's self-esteem, self confidence, and leisure time skills.

For more information on Nutrition Services, Transportation, and Fees, please call the Saugus Senior Center at 231-4178.

We've also added an item to the Yard Sales Submission Form to allow the specification of whether or not early birds will be welcomed.

We've added a Feedback Page so you can express your opinions about what we're doing, how we're doing, what we should be doing, etc. We've also relocated the search form higher up on the page and added it to a few of the other pages to help make searching easier. You're of course even welcome to give feedback on the search form changes.

As indicated yesterday, the Saugus Planning Board now has its Operating Procedures directly viewable online (actually, they were directly viewable online yesterday for those who have downloaded a copy of the Acrobat Reader plug-in for their browser).

July 22, 1998

The Saugus Planning Board now has its operating procedures online in two different formats:

PDF and Newton book. They'll probably be viewable online by sometime tomorrow. If you don't know what a PDF or a Newton book is, both can be looked up in the Saugus.net Computer Knowledgebase.

The Saugus Clock Fund is progressing well. The goal of the program is to raise $15,000 to install a clock in the tower of the Saugus Town Hall. According to founder / organizer John Chipouras, around $10,000 have already been raised and he is pleased with the response. It is hoped that the actual installation can take place within two months or so; the remainder of the money will have to be raised prior to that. If you would like to donate to the Saugus Clock Fund, make your check payable to the Saugus Clock Fund and mail it to:

Lisa Emma
25 Main Street
Saugus, MA 01906

If you have any questions about the Saugus Clock Fund, feel free to contact John Chipouras. If you're looking for the current time now and can't wait for the new clock construction (or you don't happen to live near the Saugus Town Hall), check out our Current Time Page to see the current time online as measured by atomic clock.

Speaking of the Saugus Historical Society, they just held their annual backyard picnic and barbecue over the weekend and have a page of pictures taken at the event.

July 17, 1998

Although it's been public and active for awhile, up 'til now we haven't officially announced the creation of the new Saugus Historical Society Page. Many have already found it through the Organizations Page, but still we thought it would be nice to mention it here. Keep in mind that the Saugus Historical Society's page is still very much a work in progress at this point, and that many things may change, be added, or be deleted as time goes on.

Numerous updates to the Event Calendar today, including information on the Saugus Farmers' Market in Cliftondale, the free Iron Works concerts, and a public hearing discussing the removal of a huge Norway Maple on Hayden Road.

Jim Harrington's popular "Saugus Photos Online" web site is moving to Saugus.net. Its new home will be:

https://www.saugus.net/Photos/

and can be reached there immediately. It will probably also stay active on its old location for a couple of days.

July 14, 1998

The Saugus Planning Board is now accepting questions and complaints via an online form in addition to the ordinary paper form method. Asking a question / submitting a complaint via this new method should have exactly the same effect as asking a question / submitting a complaint via the paper method but may save a trip or two to the Saugus Town Hall.

It's the time of year for yard sales; they're springing up everywhere and their announcements are appearing on telephone poles all over town. We've decided to create a yard sales page to help with the public dissemination of yard sale information. If you're planning a yard sale or garage sale, why not announce it here in addition to the more traditional means? It's completely free and can be done via online form, e-mail, FAX, or phone.

The permanent home for this new page will be on the General Information page.

The Saugus Town Clerk's office is in the process of moving from its old temporary location in the Temporary Town Hall to its new temporary location in the School Administration Building. It will be closed today as it goes through this changeover, but should be open in the new location on Monday. It is expected to stay in the School Administration Building at least up through the elections in November.

July 8, 1998

The Saugus Planning Board page has moved and is now being hosted by us at Saugus.net. Its new URL is:

http://town.saugus.ma.us/PB/

so be sure to update your bookmarks. We'll be keeping a permanent pointer to it on our Government page. Also on the topic of the Planning Board, it should be noted that since the Saugus Town Hall Annex is being refashioned into temporary classrooms, the Planning Board meetings will no longer be held there. Future Planning Board meetings will be held in the Saugus High School Cafeteria (until announced otherwise).

July 7, 1998

The Saugus Town Hall wishes it to be known that there will be a public hearing on Monday at 7:00 PM to review and discuss the Town's proposed grant application to the FY 1998 Community Development Fund (CDF) of the Massachusetts Community Development Block Grant Program. The activities being considered for this funding request include a housing rehabilitation program. The hearing will also review the performance of recent prior and existing grants. The hearing will be held in the Town Hall Annex at 400 Central St.

Any person or organization so wishing will be afforded an opportunity to be heard. The hearing will enable persons to respond to proposals, offer suggestions and proposals for possible funding, and seek information about the grant. The hearing location is accessible to persons with physical disabilities. If you require a translator, contact the Community Development Office at 231-4142. Notice of this hearing has also been added to the Event Calendar.

July 6, 1998

There was a slight goof-up on the Event Calendar (now corrected) that listed the first day of Saugus Public Schools for 1998 - 1999 as being on a Saturday. The listed date of the first of September was correct, just the day of the week was wrong; it is really a Tuesday. Kudos to Jim Harrington for catching and reporting the error.

July 2, 1998

Both the Saugus Town Hall and the Saugus.net offices will be closed tomorrow in observation of Independence Day.

July 1, 1998

There's a new feature on Saugus.net -- a most popular pages list. Each month, the fifteen most popular pages from the prior month will be listed in order. This list will not bother to include this main page (by far the most popular on the site) or track most sub-pages (thus individual post cards will never make the list). Plus it will for now only track pages with a Saugus.net URL; we may expand the functionality if the popular pages list itself becomes popular.

For June, it is interesting to note how well the Neighborhoods page did, considering it doesn't have any real information in it yet. If you represent a local neighborhood group and want your voice heard, please contact us and we'll try and add your contributions to the page. There is already an audience in waiting.
