The Saugus Annual Town Meeting came to a close last night. Most of the articles were bookkeeping sorts of formalities, but there were extended discussions on both the fate of the old Police / Fire Station (it was referred back to the Town Manager who will study the issue further) and a proposal to require a public Board of Health meeting prior to either the expansion of an existing solid waste facility or the creation of a new one (it was approved; the Board of Health will have to hold such meetings).

A few photographs from the recent Art Show held by the Center for the Arts in Saugus at the Saugus Historical Society house have been posted.

After a lengthy off-season, the yard sales calendar has been restored. We'll be adding a few new features to it today and tomorrow.

The Saugus High School Alumni Association site was updated today with new pictures.

Saugus Annual Town Meeting highlights include the passing of a balanced (albeit extremely tight) budget. Most departments (including the School Department) got level funded (in terms of dollars), but level funding still lead to quite a few layoffs. The Finance Committee additionally expects that there will be no relief in the next couple of years and challenged the Administration to start a new era of leadership.

The Saugus.net Dailies (basically what you're reading now) are now available via RSS and can be read with any recent RSS client (there are dozens available, many for free; HotSheet, NetNewsWire Lite, and AmphetaDesk are a few free examples).

It's been a long time since the last update on the Saugus SETI team has been posted here. Saugus area machines have already contributed over 2050 results, utilizing nearly five years' worth of CPU time that would have otherwise been wasted. New participants are welcome; the project itself has only just started a new phase so there is still time to make a difference.

June 10, 2003

Saugus Annual Town Meeting highlights include the passing of a few articles concerning revolving funds covering topics like the landfill closing costs, the water system cross-connection program, and the self-sufficient recreational programs. An article was also passed giving $86,000 to the School Department to cover all remaining negotiated settlements, and an article was passed to slightly increase the water rate in order to match increases in water costs.

The Saugus Community Events Calendar now has support for the iCalendar standard. What this means is that if you have a savvy application like Mozilla or iCal, you will be able to subscribe to the Saugus Community Calendar and get updates automatically.
